Turning Everyday Spending into Meaningful Social Impact

KUALA LUMPUR, July 1 (Bernama) --  Maybank Islamic Berhad (Maybank Islamic) has disbursed more than RM7 million through its Ikhwan Charity Fund over the past decade, transforming everyday credit card spending into meaningful social impact across healthcare, education, disaster relief, and community development in Malaysia and beyond.

The charity feature is embedded across five Maybank Islamic Ikhwan and corporate credit cards, whereby Maybank Islamic contributes between 0.1% and 0.2% of cardholders’ local and/or overseas spending to the Ikhwan Charity Fund, at no additional cost to cardholders.

The charity element is incorporated into the Maybank Islamic Mastercard Business Card-i, Visa Corporate Card-i, World Elite Mastercard Ikhwan, Ikhwan Mastercard Platinum Card-i, and Ikhwan Mastercard Gold Card-i.

Group CEO, Islamic Banking and CEO, Maybank Islamic, En Mohamad Yasin Abdullah, said:

“This unique model reflects the principles of Islamic finance, where financial activities are guided by ethical considerations and aimed at delivering positive societal outcomes. It is also a reflection of our Humanising Financial Services mission, where finance goes beyond transactions. Through the Maybank Islamic Ikhwan Charity Fund, we are able to channel everyday spending into initiatives that uplift lives, support vulnerable groups, and strengthen communities. Our financial solutions are designed not only to serve customers’ needs, but also to contribute positively to society and deliver shared value for all.”

Over the past 10 years, the Fund has supported a wide range of humanitarian and community initiatives in collaboration with organisations such as MERCY Malaysia, Islamic Relief Malaysia, Islamic Aid Malaysia, Yayasan Pelajaran MARA, Yayasan Chow Kit, and Institut Jantung Negara. These initiatives span medical assistance, access to clean water, education sponsorships, vocational training, and emergency relief efforts.

The Fund has also played a critical role in supporting communities during times of need, including COVID-19 assistance and flood relief efforts across multiple states, as well as providing targeted aid for vulnerable families and small businesses affected by natural disasters.

Beyond humanitarian support, the Fund has strengthened community engagement nationwide through religious and social programmes such as Iftar Perdana, Qurban Perdana, Adopt-a-Mosque initiatives, and Syawal community celebrations, benefiting mosques, tahfiz institutions, students, and underserved communities across Malaysia.

“The Maybank Islamic Ikhwan Charity Fund exemplifies how collective contributions can deliver sustainable impact. As we continue to grow our business, we remain committed to advancing values-based Islamic finance that delivers meaningful outcomes for society, while empowering customers to be part of positive change through their everyday spending,” said Mohamad Yasin.
